I was born in Sofia, Bulgaria where I studied Illustration at the Sofia’s Academy of Fine Arts and the five-year Special School of Fine Arts with an emphasis on Classical realism. In 1990 I was able to escape the communist regime in Bulgaria and immigrate to the U.S. In 1994, I received a B.F.A. in Illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City with high honors. I’ve been an illustrator, designer and a fine artist, and always pursuing my true passion – painting. My style continuously shifts from realistic to abstract and back to realistic flavored with liberating elements of the abstract. My abstract work doesn’t reference recognizable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. By using abstraction, I reveal intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles. I work mostly in acrylic, enamel, pen and ink.
In my realistic work, I love painting en plein air of places and people using watercolor and acrylic.
My work can be found in myriad of public and private art collections both, in the United States and abroad, and has been part of numerous exhibitions worldwide. I currently live and work in Cary, North Carolina with my family enjoying the beauty and tranquility of the area.

I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.
"Lyudmila Tomova’s magnificent work reminiscence the art of Paul Klee and the palette of the Paleolithic cave artists of Altamira, which, by my reckoning, makes for an original hyphenate, Bauhaus-Cro Magnon"− Peter Kaminsky
"Her recent work shows the complexity and maturity of style that combines all of her past transformations into one distinct signature."−
